Black Pepper

Piper nigrum

Black Pepper is a well-known cooking spice used to enhance the flavour of foods. Described as hot, sharp, fruity, and spicy, Black Pepper essential oil can be added to meats, soups, entrées, and salads to enhance flavour. Although Black Pepper is commonly known for its vast culinary uses, its topical benefits are equally noteworthy.

Primary Benefits

Cooking with Black Pepper

It takes far less of an essential oil to flavour your food than dry seasonings, spices, or other flavouring agents. Because essential oils are so potent, even the tiniest amount can add a serious blast of flavour to your dish. When using Black Pepper oil in cooking, it is best to use the toothpick method – dip the tip of a clean toothpick into the essential oil bottle and stir the toothpick into your ingredients. After you’ve stirred the toothpick around in the dish, do a taste test to see whether you want to add more of the oil or not.

Sourcing

Why Africa?

Black pepper requires particular growing conditions to thrive. We source our black pepper from an area in Africa where the climate is ideal for the plant—the exact location is proprietary.

How Does It Work?

Africa

Black pepper grows on a flowering vine that can grow up to 32 feet (10 m) tall. It can be grown interspersed among shade crop trees, such as coffee. The black pepper vine has green, almond-shaped leaves. Among the leaves are fruit clusters, known as drupes, that can grow up to about 6 inches (15 cm) long. As the fruit matures, it changes from green to dark red. After being harvested and dried, the black pepper fruit turns even darker, appearing black. Black Pepper essential oil is produced using steam distillation. Although its colour is most brilliant in the early summer, we harvest our lavender plants in July. Once its bright purple colour has started to fade from exposure to the summer heat, the plant produces higher quantity and quality oil.
