Known for its rich hue and warm, woody scent, Cedarwood essential oil provides a myriad of benefits for skin. Cedarwood is regarded as one of the most grounding oils and helps to promote a calming environment at the end of a long day. It is native to cold climates, thriving in high altitudes and growing up to 30 m. When applied topically, Cedarwood has clarifying properties. Additionally, Cedarwood is frequently used in massage therapy to relax and soothe the mind and bod.
Siam wood—also known as Thai rosewood—is native to Southeast Asia and is often used to make furniture.
Siam Wood essential oil is typically steam-distilled from woodchips or sawdust. It’s prized in perfumery for its warm, exotic scent. The oil is also valued for creating an uplifting atmosphere.
The coconut extract used in Vanilla Chai essential oil blend is a unique supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) material that offers a traditional coconut aromatic profile, while also providing a creaminess to the oil blend.
The benefits and uses of clove date back to ancient China and India. As a cooking spice, Clove adds a spicy flavour to any dish or dessert. Clove is also widely used in dental preparations, candy, and gum, for its flavour.
A close relation to Cinnamon, Cassia has a strong, spicy aroma that can be used in small quantities to transform any essential oil blend or spice-filled dessert. Cassia can be used in cooking, either as a replacement for cinnamon in pies and breads, or by itself in a myriad of entrées and desserts.
Black Pepper is a well-known cooking spice used to enhance the flavour of foods. Described as hot, sharp, fruity, and spicy, Black Pepper essential oil can be added to meats, soups, entrées, and salads to enhance flavour. Although Black Pepper is commonly known for its vast culinary uses, its topical benefits are equally noteworthy.
Nootka essential oil is distilled from the majestic Nootka tree, a relative of Arborvitae, common in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. Nootka cypress is known to be one of the most robust cedar varieties in the world and is often referred to as yellow cedar or yellow cypress. In an environmental initiative, dōTERRA utilizes the wood scraps from forestry to distill Nootka essential oil, thus making use of wood waste that would otherwise be discarded.
Star anise is an evergreen tree indigenous to southeastern Asia. Usually the trees grow only 4-6 metres high, but they can reach up to 20 metres. In Chinese culture, the plant is called “eight-horned anise” or simply “eight horns,” referring to the fruit which usually has eight follicles. Anethole, the main chemical component of Star Anise, is what creates the characteristic licorice aroma that Star Anise essential oil and fruit are known for. As a main ingredient in dōTERRA ZenGest™, Star Anise can be beneficial for stomach discomfort when used topically.
Balsam Peru, also known as “Peru balsam,” is a natural resin obtained from the trunk of the Myroxylon pereirae tree, which is primarily found in Central and South America, particularly El Salvador and Peru (hence the name). The resin is extracted by making incisions in the tree’s bark, allowing the aromatic liquid to flow out and then harden into a reddish-brown resin. As a fragrance ingredient, Balsam Peru has a warm, rich, and sweet scent with vanilla and cinnamon-like notes, along with a hint of smokiness. Its aroma is often described as cozy, comforting, and slightly spicy. Balsam Peru has been used for centuries in perfumery because of its aromatic qualities. It serves as a base note in many fragrances, providing depth, warmth, and sweetness. It’s also often used in cosmetic and personal care products for its scent and skin-soothing properties.
Sourced from Madagascar, dōTERRA Ginger essential oil is derived from the fresh rhizome of the ginger plant – the subterranean stalk of a plant that shoots out the root system. A featured ingredient in many Asian dishes, Ginger has a hot, fragrant flavour when used as a kitchen spice. In Western tradition, Ginger is most often used in sweets like gingerbread and ginger snaps.
Cistus, a woody shrub of the Cistaceae family, grows in the Mediterranean basin on poor soil, especially in Spain, Crete and Cyprus. Its very fragrant flowers blossom from April to June. Two of its species (Cistus creticus and Cistus monspeliensis) with white and pink flowers, fill the Corsican scrub land with scent which prompted Napoleon to say that he would recognise his island eyes closed by its perfume.

Prized since the time of the ancient Aztecs and often used in perfumes, vanilla is one of the most popular aromas in the world and one of the most expensive to produce. The vanilla planifolia plant is in the Orchid family, with yellow-white flowers that produce odourless pods or beans. After a labour-intensive harvesting process, the beans are ground into small pieces to preserve the natural vanilla aroma. A two-step extraction process captures the constituents from the beans to create the absolute. We combine this absolute with Fractionated Coconut Oil and the result is dōTERRA Madagascar Vanilla. Use as a captivating personal fragrance, or add a few drops to a bath oil to enjoy a luxurious moment surrounded by the exquisite aroma of Madagascar Vanilla.
Native to Southeast Asia, Cardamom is added to traditional Indian sweets and teas for its cool, minty aroma and flavour. Add to bread, smoothies, meats, and salads to enhance flavour. Valued worldwide as a spice, Cardamom is an essential oil that may also prove beneficial in many other ways.
