Star anise is an evergreen tree indigenous to southeastern Asia. Usually the trees grow only 4-6 metres high, but they can reach up to 20 metres. In Chinese culture, the plant is called “eight-horned anise” or simply “eight horns,” referring to the fruit which usually has eight follicles. Anethole, the main chemical component of Star Anise, is what creates the characteristic licorice aroma that Star Anise essential oil and fruit are known for. As a main ingredient in dōTERRA ZenGest™, Star Anise can be beneficial for stomach discomfort when used topically.

Sourced from Madagascar, dōTERRA Ginger essential oil is derived from the fresh rhizome of the ginger plant – the subterranean stalk of a plant that shoots out the root system. A featured ingredient in many Asian dishes, Ginger has a hot, fragrant flavour when used as a kitchen spice. In Western tradition, Ginger is most often used in sweets like gingerbread and ginger snaps.

Bergamot is the most delicate of the citrus plants, requiring a special climate and soil in order to thrive. In Greece, the unripe fruits are eaten by the spoonful as a dessert or with coffee. Bergamot is also unique among citrus oils because of its ability to be both uplifting and calming. Bergamot has been used for hundreds of years to promote calm and rejuvenate the complexion.

Ylang Ylang essential oil is derived from the star-shaped flowers of the tropical Ylang Ylang tree. This essential oil is used extensively in making perfumes and in aromatherapy, and has been used in religious and wedding ceremonies for centuries. Ylang Ylang is frequently used in luxurious hair and skin products for its rich, sweet aroma and also for its protective properties. Ylang Ylang is also known to promote calmness and lift mood.

Centuries ago, ancient Egyptians used Frankincense resin for everything from perfume to salves for the skin. Lemongrass produces a smoky, citrus essential oil that offers a variety of benefits to the user. Lemongrass has a pungent, herbaceous aroma that can brighten any room.

Dipteryx odorata is a beautiful flowering tree that belongs to the pea family, Fabaceae and is commonly known as ‘cumaru’, ‘kumaru’, or ‘Brazilian teak’. This species of tree is native to Northern South America and its seeds are known as tonka beans. These beans are highly fragrant due to their high content of coumarin, which gives them a sweet vanilla scent.

Vanilla planifolia is a variety of vanilla orchid that can be found in several regions, including Mexico, Central America, Colombia and Brazil. This evergreen vine has a high vanillin content that makes it a popular source of vanilla flavouring.
