The Season of Annoyance: Why Mosquitoes Love You

Warm days, open windows, and evenings spent outside bring one not-so-romantic guest: mosquitoes that seem to know exactly who to choose. While the person next to you sits untouched, as if they have VIP protection, you somehow become the all-you-can-eat buffet for these tiny nuisances.

Bad news: it’s not paranoia – they really do like you.

Good news: there are ways to make yourself less appealing.

Why Do Mosquitoes Choose You?

Mosquitoes are tiny, flying detectives with very clear criteria.

1. CO₂: “There’s dinner.”

Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale. The more CO₂ we produce (for example, after exercise or if we naturally have a more active metabolism), the more interesting we are to them. In short: if we breathe – we’re already on their radar.

2. “Chemical ID”

Our skin releases substances such as lactic acid, ammonia, and fatty acids. Some people simply have a “scent signature” that mosquitoes love. In other words, your body is sending them a very clear signal: “Right here.”

3. Blood type (yes, really)

Research shows that people with blood type O are more likely to end up as a top choice on the mosquito menu. If you’ve ever asked yourself: “Why me?” – genetics definitely has an answer.

4. Body temperature

A warmer body = an easier target.

That’s why mosquitoes are especially attracted to you after a workout, during warm evenings, and when you’re “running hot” from joy (or stress!).

How to Disappoint Mosquitoes with Essential Oils

Now we come to the key part. Certain scents can interfere with how mosquitoes find their target – and essential oils are especially useful here. Here are the essential oils mosquitoes can’t stand.

Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus)

  • Contains citral → strong repellent effect
  • Fresh, citrus scent that confuses mosquitoes

Citronella (Cymbopogon winterianus)

  • A classic natural repellent
  • Masks the scents mosquitoes use to find you

Lemon Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus citriodora)

  • Contains citronellal → strong repellent effect
  • Provides a sense of freshness and protection

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)

  • Soothes the skin
  • Helps even after a bite (win-win)

Peppermint (Mentha piperita)

  • Strong menthol scent that mosquitoes avoid
  • Provides a cooling sensation (perfect for warm evenings)

Cedarwood (Juniperus virginiana)

  • Woody aroma that insects do not tolerate
  • Has a calming effect (bonus benefit)

Basil (Ocimum basilicum)

  • Contains eugenol → a known repellent compound
  • Fresh, herbal scent that keeps insects away

Pro tip: blend = power

The best effect is achieved when combining multiple essential oils, especially from different aromatic groups: citrus + herbal + woody + floral.

Here is an example of a simple natural mosquito-repellent spray:

  • 20 ml fractionated coconut oil
  • 15 drops Lemongrass
  • 15 drops Citronella
  • 15 drops Lemon Eucalyptus
  • 5 drops Cedarwood
  • 5 drops Lavender

Shake well and apply before going outside.

Bonus: it smells like a natural perfume, not a chemical laboratory.

Most commercial repellents, such as those containing DEET, are designed to effectively repel insects, but come with certain concerns regarding the chemicals they contain. DEET can irritate the skin in sensitive individuals, and its strong, chemical smell is often unpleasant for everyday use, especially in enclosed spaces or around children. More and more people are looking for simpler, more natural alternatives that they can use without questioning the ingredients. That is why essential oils are becoming a popular choice – not only because of their scent, but because of the feeling that we are applying to our skin something we understand and trust.

Small tricks for peaceful evenings

  • Use essential oils with repellent properties in a diffuser, both indoors and on terraces
  • Apply essential oils topically
  • Avoid strong, sweet perfumes – mosquitoes are attracted to them

Mosquitoes will always be looking for their next target.

With the right combination of essential oils, you can create natural protection that does not burden the skin, does not overwhelm the space, and at the same time brings a pleasant, fresh scent.

Because protection does not have to mean compromise – it can be simple, effective, and something you truly enjoy.
